The truth is, there are thousands of licensed real estate agents in Arizona, but only a small fraction of those are considered full-time professionals.
Here are a few questions to ask while interviewing potential Realtors to help you achieve your real estate goals:
- Is real estate your full-time job or do you have another career in addition to real estate?
- Are you knowledgeable and well-informed on the areas where I am interested in buying or thinking about selling? Do you live nearby so last minute showings can be easily accommodated?
- Will you provide a list of past and present clients so I can check your references? Do you have a record of 5-Star Client Reviews?
- How available and responsive will you be to my needs as a buyer or seller? Am I able to contact you via phone, text and email? How quickly will you reply?
- Are you proactive in the home buying and selling journey? Will you help identify potential properties of interest, or wait for me to come to you with a list of homes I’d like to view? Will you communicate with me regarding the feedback received after my home has been shown to potential buyers?

A full-time Realtor will be focused on their clients without the distraction of another business or job pulling them away. An experienced local agent will only choose to work in their areas of expertise and will refer any clients outside of those areas to another Realtor who can better serve and represent the client. It is also critical during the home buying process to work with an agent who lives in the vicinity of your home search area because homes hit the market daily and you don’t want to miss out on the opportunity to view the home of your dreams because your agent lives too far away to accommodate a last minute showing request. As the sayings go, “Time is Money!” and “Timing is Everything!” Both of these apply without question to real estate when it comes to buying and selling a home.
A dedicated Realtor will also value their client reviews and will gladly provide you with a list of references from past and present buyers and sellers. An online presence is also very telling when it comes to client reviews since they are often posted to Zillow, Google and Facebook. Reading client reviews and speaking with references is a great starting place, but a face to face meeting will often outweigh any of those factors. It is so important that you are able to connect on both a personal and professional level with your Realtor because there will be an abundance of interaction throughout the process. If you don’t appreciate the Realtor’s personality during the interview or you don’t like their communication style, then it is very likely that you will be unhappy with your choice once you begin the home buying or selling process. Lots of contact with your Realtor will be necessary so it is critical that you feel comfortable with your agent.
Availability and responsiveness are also key to a fabulous home buying or selling experience. If a Realtor is too busy to answer your calls/emails/texts in a timely manner or they don’t have time to meet with you in person, then they are likely overloaded and unable to provide you with the attention that you deserve. Is the Realtor willing to work proactively to help you find your dream home? When I’m working with clients, I am always on the hunt for their perfect property and I have even found homes before they ever hit the market! Diligence and perseverance often pay off in the form of finding the needle in the haystack.
